Building social justice in the local context.

Local Matters is a participatory research and professional learning programme based at the University of Manchester.
We work to empower organisations, through a range of research and professional learning skills and principles, to develop an evidence based local response to local issues. This approach recognises that poverty is different in different places; Manchester is not the same as Winchester, so requires localised knowledge and localised answers.
Essentially, we support participants to become place-based social justice researchers.

'The research has had a profound impact on our awareness of poverty. As a result, almost all decisions made in school are run through the ‘lens’ of poverty proofing. We now, as a matter of course, consider the impact of our decisions on the disadvantaged children in our school'.

'The project helped us reflect inwards to look at how social justice is actionised internally and there is a lot of potential to impact policy from this programme, especially from the group research project at the end of the programme.'
Programme participant, Cultural Sector
'The Local Matters programme is like dropping a stone into a pond and watching all the ripples coming from that. And each new cohort adds to the ripple effect… and there are lots more ripples that I can’t see yet but they’re there... absolutely transformative'
